New Secretary-General States Vision for Future (10/19/07)
NORFOLK, Va. (BNN) - In her first major address, new Secretary-General Emma G. stated her vision for the future of the United Nations, and, indeed, humanity. Her remarks are excerpted below:
"I'd like to share with you a quotation from Toni Morrison's Nobel address: 'The conventional wisdom of the Tower of Babel story is that the collapse was a misfortune. that it was the distraction, or the weight of many languages that preciipated the tower's failed architecture. That one monolithic language would have expedited the building and heaven would have been reached. Whose heaven, she wonders? And what kind? Perhaps the achievement of Paradise was premature, a little hasty if no one could take the time to understand other languages, other views, other narratives period. Had they, the heaven they imagined might have been found at their feet.'
"For me, this perfectly illustrates the role of the United Nations and Model UN in our world. Model United Nations is about empathy and compromise. It challenges us to examine the world from beyond our own national boundaries. To fairly represent a country, we research its past and its present. We strive to discover what makes it tick and understand its cultural intricacies because understanding the internal dynamics of a country is fundamental to understanding how that country interacts with others on the global stage.
"We, the future diplomats, the future government officials, will have the capacity to make the world a more understanding, more cooperative place. We will be able to offer diplomacy as a viable alternative to violence. With a broad and thorough understanding of other nations' internal struggles, sources of pride, and traditions, we will grow into not just conscientious members of our society, but responsible and empathetic members of the human race."
